Has there been any discussion on Jezebel about MacFarlane's Rihanna domestic abuse joke? While most of his jokes seemed like run of the mill "lol women are sexy/stupid" jokes, that one actually made my jaw drop.

It was while introducing django unchained, he said "This is the story of a man fighting to get back his woman, who's been subjected to unthinkable violence. Or as Chris Brown and Rihanna call it, a date movie."

I can already imagine the excuse he'll come up with if he's forced to, it will go something like, "I wasn't making fun of domestic abuse, I was trying to point out how horrible it is that they're still together and this is so common.... blah blah blah bullshit excuse"

But what his joke is really doing is shaming Rihanna for being "stupid" enough to stay with Chris Brown. Because the punchline of the joke is that Rihanna and Chris Brown are in a super fucked up relationship, it's "funny" because in his eyes it's just so ridiculous and unthinkable that they're still together. Like, can you believe that they're still together? Isn't that crazy, it's like straight out of some crazy violent movie!

But it's not ridiculous or unthinkable at all, there are millions of women right now in abusive relationships, or little girls who will grow up and be in abusive relationships, not to mention boys and men who are abused or become abusers. These people are also watching the Oscars, or are at the Oscars. And there are MANY different reasons they are staying in their abusive relationships, out of fear, out of psychological manipulation, out of necessity. And what MacFarlane is saying to all of them is "You are idiots, why aren't you leaving?"

So I want to send a big FUCK YOU to MacFarlane for perpetuating the idea that domestic abuse victims are just too stupid and gullible to leave, which he has done before in an episode of family guy.
